Profile Information

A little about yourself as an LCCian in LCC (include year graduated if a graduate)
The blue of the Pacific at our feet
the glory of skies so bright
are not half as fair
and can't compare
to our own dear blue and white.

Ach so! Who remembers this song? So what if Bacolod is kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean! But well, we were willing to be drawn into the myths of the school -and well as its attitudes! Excellence in general education, the development of well-rounded personalities, critical thinking, social responsibility must have been the main themes that will stay with me forever. I loved Drama Class and the productions (Noli me Tangere -what fun!, The Dance -oh dear), SCA, The Rays -or was it the Ripplets? Goodness, we were members of a credit coop as grade school students in the 1960s -in my work now, people are just learning it! The teachers were supportive and fun to be with. Things I can't get over: getting a 96% in Physics, Sr Leontina punishing us girls for boycotting the Corpus Christi procession, picket at the Bureau of Lands, cast parties, Annabelle and I looking for crushes!
A little about yourself after LCC
After high school, tried out four colleges (St. Theresa's, QC, St. Scho, Manila, Ateneo de Manila and cross-enrolled at UP), got an AB in four years anyway. In the first year, Marilyn Sombito and I were classmates, dorm roommates at St Theresa's even. I promised to be plain Jane, no extra-curricular activities...hehehe. Couldn't resist, ended up with the college paper and tried out for the Drama Club, joined the student protest against the phase-out of the college. With other Ateneans in the early 70s, organized the first student council after the declaration of martial law. Graduated from the Ateneo, returned in the mid-90s for an MSc in Social Development, while at the same time doing a Master of Ministry at the Union Theological Seminary. Professionally been involved in the fields I enjoyed in grade school and high school: social development, justice and peace, church engagement, journalism. Currently working with an international church organization based in Germany, although my main assignments are in Sumatra and Sri Lanka. Most of the work has been relief, rehab, reconstruction and development in the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Been doing a lot of theology (grassroot theology, Asian feminist liturgies, editing). Have just accepted privilege of editing a book on indigenous Philippine spirituality.
A little about yourself now
Husband has just announced retirement, our four kids (three sons, one daughter) are on their way. Eldest is chief resident at Ospital ng Makati; second is an artist and triathlete; third is a chef at a Makati restaurant; youngest, a girl, now studing multi-media arts.

Am in transition. After five years of being based in Germany, I am ready to move on. Planning to do a doctorate on culture and transparency. Or if a really interesting job comes up, I'd take it. I pray God will put my feet on the path She has set out!
RAGE AGAINST IMPUNITY!

INPEACE STATEMENT

ON THE MAGUINDANAO MASSACRE AND THE DEATH OF ATTY. CONNIE BRIZUELA

November 24, 2009

We grieve over the death of Atty. Concepcion ‘Connie’ Brizuela, a member of our board of convenors, who was among the many victims of pre-election violence in Maguindanao province November 23.

Our heartfelt sympathies go to Connie’s husband and children who have supported her advocacies through the years as former legal counsel of the Diocese of Kidapawan, as peoples’ lawyer, and as a woman human rights defender.

Connie’s killing, along with at least 35 civilians mostly journalists, political supporters, including another lawyer colleague, is a carnage that requires the Arroyo government to muster all its resources and political will to bring the suspected Ampatuan warlord clan to face the law.

We demand no less than for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to end her political patronage of the Ampatuan warlord clan and all her armed political allies elsewhere in the country whose rule is forced on their constituencies through fraud and terrorism.

We demand no less from government than to bring justice to all those fallen by this senseless political violence.

However, we believe that this pre-election violence should be seen from the wider perspective of the culture of impunity that prevails under the present dispensation. Government cannot claim this as another isolated and containable incidence of violence, much less as merely an election-related one.

Yesterday’s massacre was spawned by a culture of impunity that has long been kept unchecked by a government that is now widely perceived by the international community to be tolerant or approving of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and other human rights violations.

This culture of impunity imperils the exercise of the legal and media profession in the country and the defense of human rights and fundamental freedoms including the right to suffrage.

We can only surmise that, as a lawyer, Connie must have asserted herself as part of the negotiating panel to ease the tension or to remind their would-be attackers of the rule of law, if any such dialogue could have occurred at all. We are certain as well that Connie, having been a broadcaster herself, and her companions, had thought that a horde of media practitioners and the presence of women would deter any act of violence against their party.

But because of the culture of impunity in this country, these have become mere notions.

The unchecked rule of political warlords like the Ampatuans, army and police units like those controlled by President Arroyo’s mistahs, and warmongers in government like General Hermogenes Esperon and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales, make up a culture of tolerance for killings and contempt for the rule of law. Thus, this culture of impunity traces itself right back at the doorstep of Malacañang.

Connie had been at the forefront of the campaign against impunity. We are outraged that it has caught up with her through this tragic and gruesome death. We will miss her. She was a gentle but firm and determined human rights advocate. In her diminutive frame loomed large a feisty peoples’ lawyer and human rights defender undeterred by the rich and the powerful in Mindanao.

JUSTICE FOR ATTY. CONNIE BRIZUELA!

JUSTICE FOR ALL HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS!

JUSTICE AND PEACE IN MINDANAO!

Justice for Connie, Justice for Maguindanao

Dear Fellow LCCians,

The outrage that is the Maguindanao massacre has claimed the life of an LCCian, Connie Jayme Brizuela (HS Class 71). We must condemn such barbaric acts in no uncertain terms. Below is letter from Inpeace, a group that Connie has worked with closely for peace and justice in Mindanao. May her dreams live on through us!

LCC must be proud of Connie, small but terrible. A fighter till the end!

Sophie

Hi Sophie, The book club I belong to only sends lists of available books. Basically, they are purveyors of fine editions of classics & popular published materials. If you are organizing one, what members of clubs do - each member is assigned a book to read and they all meet to discuss the merits - it's mostly social & special interest. Later, Miday

Hi Sophie, good to hear from you. I do have membership to a book club called Folio Society. San Francisco is a haven for people like me, there are used book stores all over and the libraries are great.
Talk to you soon...Best regards, Miday

Manang, one of your classmates is asking for the words of the song that begins your profile page. I asked an LCCian who was only 5 years behind me but she'd never heard the song. I don't know why or when we stopped singing it but I remember it too and would love to add the words to our songbook. You began with:

The blue of the Pacific at our feet, the glory of skies so bright
are not half as fair and can't compare to our own dear blue and white.

I think this continues: Consolacion, college dear, praises of thee we sing. Within thy walls, and stately halls, our joyful voices ring. We love thy name so glorious, we hail thy fame victorious.

And then I don't know what follows. Do you?

Hi Sophie, I am really not surprised...You were a diamond in the rough. You were the wonder-girl with her nose buried in the books - I remember your library at home...I've never been so jealous of anyone - the access was just too unbearable; I had to be content with borrowing books from the small one in school. You were always so nice to lend me some of your books. It's good to know you're doing such important work in Indonesia and those exotic places...Hopefully, we will meet again one day in the future and you can share your experiences. You are truly one of LCC's finest! Keep up the good work. if the world had millions of Sophies, it would be a better place....take care, miday
p.s. i still love to read...

Hi, Sophie. I'm awed but not at all surprised at what you have achieved. On the other hand, I am completely amazed at what you've become. I've always thought of you as the docile model student. I thought the period of activism in our lives was just an ephemeral experience but perhaps not. In my own way I'm doing service to humanity by touching lives. (Easier said than done though.) As for you, I may not know exactly what it is that you do but the last sentence in your profile gives me the best clue.
Belated happy birthday. San-o gani to? And what is this book everybody is talking about. Send me a complimentary copy ha.
