UNDER THE CALACHUCHI

Way to Go Mama Mia (Aida Servando Lizares' Last Month)

We knew about Mom's cirrhosis in 2002. In 2006 she almost died and when we were told last September that she had primary liver cancer, all of us, Mom included, had fair warning. Mom grew weaker and more jaundiced as December flew by but we never saw in her any trace of fear, suffering, or reproach at our inability to help her. She enjoyed endless holiday feasts with the family (present were more than 40 children, in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren), attended a big family reunion on my father's side, and had her 81st birthday party. January 2, first thing after the new year, we flew to Manila so she could be treated by her doctor in a hospital. More

Lent and the Religious Psychology of the Filipino by Andrea Lizares Si. For fundamentalist Protestants, one of the most horrifying (if not the most horrifying) seasons of the year in Catholic Philippines is Lent. Christmas they can live with as there is nothing excessively idolatrous or fanatically superstitious in our Christmas celebrations. But Lent in the Philippines revolts every thinking Protestant fundamentalist who believes in salvation by faith alone, without any kind of human contribution by way of good-works or sacrifice and penance. Slow Down That Aging Process (First of a 3 Article Series)
by Amela Mirpuri Ucol (HS Class '73) It can be done! There is empirical evidence that attests to the possibility of being able to slow down, and even reverse, the biological process of aging. Success depends largely on the individual’s determination and frame of mind, coupled with the knowledge of appropriate measures to take toward the pursuit of retaining one’s everlasting youth. More

Reducing Photos with Adobe Photoshop (Illustrated)

Photos that are more than 300 kb take a long time to load so even if we have a new allocation of 10 Gigabytes in our new "The LCCian Shutterbug" site, reducing photos is still a good idea unless you're posting photos that you intend others to download and have printed. . . . It is not enough to "Save for Web." When you're taking photos that are more than 2 MB in size. Photoshop says the size is out of range for saving for web. Here's how I reduce pictures using Adobe Photoshop. More

Solving the Rubik's Cube It's been the rage in campus lately. Let's talk about anything you like or hate about it. I find it intriguing. Trying to get a hang of it. My sister A.C(5th grade) and her classmates are even make puzzles for it. For a colorful box, it's a fun thing to tinker with. (more) Posted by Ray John Alovera

Pilgrimage to Sri-Pada (Srilanka), by Andrea L. Si. There are places and places to see in Sri Lanka but just about every place in Asia offers ruins, colonial cities, temples, and natural wonders. This puts a pilgrimage to Sri Pada, AKA Adam's Peak, in a class in itself. A huge footprint at the top of the mountain is said to be Adam's (say the Muslims), Buddha's (say the Buddhists), Siva's (say the Hindus), and St. Thomas the Apostle's (say the Christians). 300,000 or so climb from December to May. Spelunking in Bayawan, Negros Oriental. By Andrea L. Si. In 2000,my husband and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary spelunking with 6 of our 7 children. We did not expect much from that cave- beautiful mineral formations maybe, but not danger, not challenge, not discomfort, not primal fear. Our youngest, an 8 year old boy, was with us. An older brother did not go because he thought that after a long drive, there would be nothing but a look-see and good-bye cave. Contrary to expectations, what began as fun could have turned into a nightmare. As the 20 of us went deeper into the earth, More

Feminists Behind the Wheel by Andrea Lizares Si. “We have a flat tire,” Celia, single, and a city councilor for several terms, reported. It was 7:30 in the evening and after driving for five hours and a half the two of us were finally 25 minutes away from home. . . . A few minutes earlier, Celia and I had been planning an escapade, how the two of us would go off on an unplanned land and sea trip to wherever our whims took us should Manuel, my husband, go on an all boys trip to the US or wherever.More

My Classroom I see a lot of improvements in our school everyday when I go to work as I always passby lcc going to work. Im just sad though and I guess missing the familiar buildings of our alma mater. the structures that I grew up with. It would have been nicer if the facade of these buildings were preserved, because in my own layman's intelligence of architecture it can be done. I hope they won't uproot our kalachuchi for modernization sake....

LCCians (of LCC-Bacolod) love taking and sharing pictures and videos so this website, lccianphotos.ning.com is for the shutterbugs among us. I hope this new lccian site will be a better alternative for us than looking for photo hosts outside ning.com. After you upload an album in lccianphotos.ning.com, embed a link to your album as a video in LCCians of the World so people can see your slideshow and photos.

Welcome LCCians of the World (by Network creator Andrea Lizares Si) Amazing LCCians are all over the world but our school, our alumni office, and even our schoolmates often do not know where we are or what we have accomplished. Year after year, alumni come home to LCC for their jubilee year celebrations, they have a lot of fun with their classmates, present their numbers in our dear old auditorium, then bid good-bye and everything is so "Lumabay labay na daw aso." I thought we could do better. I thought that as a family, our mother LCC should know where we are. I thought we should know where and how are our schoolmates, teachers, and the school community we used to know. LCC will always be part of us but without any means of connecting to the school and to each other, the LCCian in us sleeps. More

Book and Movie Talk

Twilight Mania by Susanne T. Let's talk about the new movie Twilight..
Starring Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen..
Have u seen the movie? What can u say about the story or the characters, etc..?

Twilight Saga. (posted by Alexandra Anuales, FA Industrial Design) . . . .Most of us know about twilight (thanks to the movie of course). The story of the human girl, bella, falling in love with a vampire, Edward, who in turn feels the same way. (So true about a lion falling in love with a lamb!) the book was written on Bella’s perspective describing every experience and emotion she had while the story took place. And I practically had a wide grin when I found out that Meyer was actually rewriting twilight based on edward’s point of view! It’s entitled midnight sun. excited as I am about it, I still can’t help but feel sorry for meyer. You see, she wasn’t able to finish the book yet but her unfinished manuscript has circulated the web.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Review by Alexandra Anuales) . . . . a parallel novel written by gregory maguire based upon the writings of l. frank baum (author of Wizard of Oz) and was a revisionists look on the land and characters of oz. unlike the popular 1939 movie and baum's writings, this novel was not directed at children and contained adult language and content. the plot was a political, social, and ethical commentary on what good and evil are. it took place in the land of oz in the years before dorothy's arrival and it centered on Elphaba, the green skinned girl who later on grew up and became the notorious wicked witch of the west. more

Andrea Lizares Si (HS'73,AB '78) Blogging in LCCians of the World
Although we have many members who enjoy commenting on each other's pages here, bloggers are in short supply in LCCians of the World. Blogging is a very good outlet for self-expression, however. In other networks, people write blogs about everything, personal thoughts, travel experiences, memories and reflections, even to teach technical or legal matters. NM Valenzuela (Arki'97,Mech'02) SERENDIPITY, DESTINY OR FATE, which one?
by NMV. Every human being has an unknown future. We cannot determine what will be like tomorrow or in the future. We do a lot of recourse to overcome the unknown future by career enhancing ourselves in order to have a direction in our lives; 1. By Education: We educate ourselves so we would have a chance of working and make a living on something we would like for us to be, by choice or by popular demand, or because our parents are one. This way we are predetermining our destin… Continue

roberto "boy" parcon Culture Shox no. 1,068
At my friend’s apartment building in downtown Riyadh, I got into an elevator with a new Khasmiri elevator boy who seemed enthusiastically engrossed at being the culprit pushing the control buttons to the different floors. As I entered, he waggled his head reverently at me, as is their custom in Khasmir, and with a hand on his heart to show courtesy, confidently inquired in his most competent English: “WHERE FLOOR IS GO???!!? I smiled back and answered “Seventh floor, please.” At this, he turned… Continue

ENRIQUE the robot
Upon the stairway of despair, Complete with broken love affairs And promises that never came, But faded with a touch of shame, A pretty girl with golden hair And innocence so sadly rare, Strove to keep her head above A way of life devoid of love. I’m through with love, done with chances Spirit crushed by past romances, Just be a friend in word and deed. That… Continue

ENRIQUE about me
i am no one special; of this i am sure. i am a common man with common thoughts, and i’ve led a common life. there are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but i’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough. i have no complaints about my path and the places it has taken me; enough complaints to fill a circus tent about other things, maybe, but the path i’ve chosen has always been the right one, and i wouldn’t have had it any othe… Continue
